Acres treated spikes

Although wheat diseases such as leaf rust, pictured, tan spot and scab outbreaks were not severe in 2008, researchers said their prevalence in 2007 might have encouraged farmers to apply preventative pesticides in 2008.
Acres treated with pesticides across the state set a new record in 2008 by jumping more than 10 million acres, according to a recently released study.
Conducted by North Dakota State University in collaboration with the state’s agricultural statistics office, “Pesticide Use and Pest Management Practices in North Dakota 2008” revealed that pesticide-treated acres jumped nearly 30 percent, from 22.5 million acres in 2004 to 32.6 million acres in 2008, the highest recorded figure since the study began in 1978.

USA experiencing an OK winter so farSun, February 7, 2010 @ 1:58PM Normal 0 Not, mind you, that anyone is watching anything this weekend except the Colts’ showdown with the Saints in Miami starting around 5 or so, but in a programming move that makes a perverse kind of sense, ABC Sunday is airing four episodes of “Modern Family” interspersed with “The Middle” and “Cougar Town,” so that’s a ... demographic or two ... Courteney Cox is impossibly funny but I probably won’t be tuning in one way or t’other, although I may try to pick it up afterwards with the vaguely unnerving “Undercover Boss,” where bosses take entry-level positions in their own blue-collar companies and experience the business end of the work. In the past I’ve talked about my favorite show on television being “Psych.” Thanks to USA it’s fifth season resumed, it’s back and it’s just as enjoyable as ever.

Taping a kid's mouth shut in school isn't worth $500,000Wed, February 3, 2010 @ 11:41AM There's a story on the national wire today about a mother suing a school district for $500,000 because last fall a school secretary taped her kid's mouth shut. The secretary was charged with child abuse and fired. Gee. I know a couple of families that could have gotten rich suing my home school district for the same thing. Of course that kind of punishment was taken less seriously 25 years ago and the families would have been laughed out of court, but it's still something to think about. One of my teachers taped a classmate's mouth shut on a couple of occasions, in front of the entire class, because he couldn't stop talking. Another of my teachers drew a circle on the wall, in chalk, just high enough so a kid would have to stand on tip toe to reach it, and recalcitrant kids spent the hour pressing their noses into the wall. Further punishment awaited those who didn't keep straining their leg muscles.
