‘The Marriage Ref’ isn’t as bad as you’ve heardWed, March 10, 2010 @ 7:59PM There’s genius lurking someplace in this equation, but don’t tell the critics. To start with, people like celebrities, and they like gossiping about people’s marriages, which together right there is nearly the entire stock in trade for “TMZ” and the E! network. They also like sneaking peeks and being frankly horrified by other people’s private lives, which encompasses most of the reality shows out there. Boil it all together with an affable host and a campy ‘50s horn section and you’ve got NBC’s big band bombshell “The Marriage Ref.” As producer Jerry Seinfeld explains in the opening credits, host and “marriage ref” Tom Papa is basically a comedian friend of his who is willing to listen to both sides of an argument and make a ruling, with input from a panel of celebrity experts.

Slip'n'Slide BowlFri, September 11, 2009 @ 5:29PM Looking forward to covering the Minot High School/Grand Forks Red River football game tonight. It's been pouring rain in Minot for the entire day and it's going to really be a mess out there, which should be at least mildly entertaining to watch. Actually aside from the fact that the field will be a 100-yard Slip'n'Slide, it should be a very competitive game. The teams are ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in the state through the first two weeks. Red River's got some guys that can really fly, including all four members of last year's 4x100 state championship relay team. The Magicians have some guys with get up and go as well. Donte Smart ran for over 200 yards last week and Jonas Tengesdal has two 100-yard games despite not getting a ton of carries. He's busted a 50+ yard run in each game so far. The key in this one will be limiting big plays and who can handle the conditions the best. Even if it stops remaining before kickoff, the field conditions are going to be slick.

Harvey at VelvaThu, October 15, 2009 @ 11:52PM The annual Harvey/Velva football clash is ripe with playoff implications again. Since it is such a big game I am dedicating the entire week's best blog to it. Enjoy. No. 5 Harvey (5-1 Region 3, 6-1) at No. 2 Velva (6-0 Region 3, 7-0) Why it's important -- Numerous reasons, but the biggest is that the winner will be the Region 3 champion and take the No. 1 seed into the Class A playoffs. This is the final game of the regular season and one of the most anticipated regular season matchups every year due to the history between the schools, its players and its coaches. Harvey coach Brad Sandy and Velva coach Larry Sandy are brothers. Recent history -- Velva has won four of the last six meetings between the two teams, although Harvey has won two of the last three. Velva beat Harvey 20-7 in the regular season last year, but Harvey turned around and beat Velva 27-0 in the state semifinals a couple weeks later. Championship history -- Harvey won Class A titles in 1998, 2007 and 2008.

I skipped the Olympics this yearWed, March 3, 2010 @ 1:52PM The Olympics are over? Why did I not watch them? I used to love watching the figure skating during the Olympics but I realize now that I didn't watch much of those. I think I turned in at the tail end of the women's figure skating competition just in time to see the medal ceremony. I think the Canadian who lost her mom was the bronze medalist. I'm still not sure who the gold medalist was. I haven't bothered to look up the medal count. I'm not sure what the problem was this year. Surely the athletes were as good as they ever are. I do find the figure skaters' costumes pretty outrageous. Some of the costumes could rival a Las Vegas showgirl act or some avant garde production off Broadway. I'd be in favor of some sort of dress code like they have at Wimbledon requiring that skaters look grown-up and dignified, like they should given the elegance of the sport. They are spectacular athletes and often gifted artists.
