A round trip that’s worth it
Andrea Johnson/MDN --
Marshall Burch, left, a fourth-grader at Our Redeemer’s Christian School, and his older brother Levi, a sophomore, commute 120 miles round trip from Westhope every day to attend the school.
Every weekday morning the Burch family makes a 120-mile round trip from Westhope so their sons can attend school at Our Redeemer’s Christian School. “Our truck has 280,000 miles on it,” said Levi Burch, a sophomore. “Our van has 190,000 miles on it.” The family does do some car-pooling to save money on gas, but there are days when Levi drives alone. If he has to stay late for a school function, he drives back later. Next year, if he’s a member of the National Honor Society, he might have to get up even earlier to arrive at school in time for a 7:30 a.m. meeting, as both of his older sisters did when they were in school. His older sisters were in a serious car accident about four years ago near the base but that didn’t keep them out of school. Levi’s dad, Darryl, works at Minot Air Force Base and his mom, Michelle, runs a part-time cake decorating business in town, so the family already has significant ties to Minot, but it’s still a long commute.
